"Paolo and Francesca is a thoroughly artistic piece of work. The poet has composed his drama deftly. There are no waste places, no recitative. The acts illustrate an inherent sequence, and the scenes fit together with true tongue and groove closeness. There are no distractions, no obiter; everything contributes. Moreover, this cooperation of detail is often spiritual, almost never mechanical, and when machinery is inevitable it works smoothly and naturally... All this leisurely and successful artistry is too serious to be called dilettante, and yet it is saved from cleverness mainly by a certain decorum. Is it too decorous? Malatesta himself is very well behaved. Things proceed with much circumspection. There are no violences. The drama is dramatic in virtue of its skillful composition and of the splendid subject and its corollaries of setting and situation, not of its quality. The reader must not expect to be much moved by Mr. Phillips. It is the story that he will be moved by. But he will be charmed. The drama is poetic. One that returns to that. It is pure churlishness at the present moment to object to any real poetry that it is not of another kind. W. C. Brownell in The Book Buyer."
