"A fascinating story based closely on actual events in Scotland, of King James IV, and a woman who fell in love with him at first meet. Carefully researched, the actual events of Scotland in the 16th Century form a backdrop to the ways of men and women and kings at that time. The language they are scripted to use is full of words in common usage then. The clothes they wear, the horses they ride, the houses and castles they use are all quite real in this tale. I particularly liked the descriptions of old ceremonies and customs from before Christianity, contrasted against the new acceptance of that faith by those who still clung tenaciously to their old ways. Historical fiction, I believe it would be said of this story. Were there indeed women in that day who thought as Flaming Janet did? Women of high intelligence, held back by custom and patriarchy and misogyny? Were there women like Jan, who refused to be roped into servitude and marriage and endless child-rearing? who thought of other things, and dreamed, and mostly got their way, despite the wagging tongues and condemnation by others? Probably. For there are indeed, many women and men who do not do as they are told or expected, and forge a life for themselves from their dreams, through action." - Goodreads review
