Snubbed by his tripe because his mother is not of their people, shattered by the death of his beloved godfather, Little Otter feels that his loneliness is more than he can bear - until he discovers Willow, an injured coyote pup, wedged in a cluster of rocks.
The indian boy nurses Willow back to health; but he knows that the golden coyote, an outcast like himself, poses a threat to his tribes already lean corn crop. he sets out to find a new home for himself and his pet - but then suddenly comes upon a Navajo raiding party. The frightened boy realizes that his village is in danger and hastens back to give warning. He seeks help of his mother, and together they devise an ingenious and hilarious ruse to outwit the raiders. At last, Little Otter discovers where he belongs and what he must do for Willow.
Authentic background descriptions of the life of the ancient Pueblo Indians and warm, expressive illustrations by Richard Cuffari make this a sensitive and moving account of a young Indian boys growth to maturity.
