The girl, Anne Farnsworth, is a Virginia neighbor of "Tom Jefferson," just turned thirty and already a power in affairs of the Colonies as a member of the House of Burgesses in Williamsburg. The story follows Annes experiences in growing up at an exciting period of history. She develops from a mischievous, irresponsible girl, to a thoughtful young American in the days when to be an American was news, and she holds the readers affection through her delightful efforts to earn five gold sovereigns in a very unusual way.
