Jesuit Father Ben Lomax has death written on his face - with reason. There have been many attempts on his life, and he can count on there being more. For there is a price on his head in many Communist countries - countries from which he has helped defectors escape. Albania is particularly anxious to get him, because the priest enabled Chinas most famous composer to defect from there. And now it is to Albania that he has to return.
Father Lomax has been given a new mission by the Columba Group, the refugee organization he helped to start. It specializes now in encouraging defection, and its current goal is one of Russias most outstanding scientists. It is up to Father Lomax to rescue the nuclear physicist - and it is up to Detective Sergeant Felton of the Special Branch to keep the priest alive at all costs. They make the voyage together, and with them goes the beautiful French agent who inspired the Russian to defect.
The priest, the detective, and the French girl reach their rendezvous point on the mountainous Albanian coastline only to discover that they have been duped by their own organizations. Their mission turns from that of rescue to that of survival in an enemy land. Peter Kinsley has written a vivid novel of suspense and intrigue - outstanding for its realism and for its truly unusual leading characters.
